The musical numbers Miranda visualizes with cinematographer Alice Brooks are stunning. He along with screenwriter Steven Levenson have very wisely chosen a framing device where Jonathan Larson is performing his rock monologue in front of an audience at New York Theatre Workshop with his friends Roger (Joshua Henry) and Karessa (Vanessa Hudgens)-a pretty clever nod to the origins of this musical. For his feature directorial debut, Lin-Manuel Miranda does a terrific job.
The weakness of this movie is the director. However, the way the story was told wasn't endearing to me. Specially from Andrew Garfield and surprisingly Alexandra Shipp. I have watched it and the acting was solid. For Jon, life is ticking by and he wants to leave his mark on the world before his time runs up.Īndrew Garfield brings Larson to life in Tick, Tick Boom showcasing the playwright’s life at 30 from his work which is on the cusp of gaining some traction to his relationships that are both straining and blooming in this chapter of his career. He’s surrounding by the magic of New York City in its glitz and its grime, and supported by all of his friends but when it comes to the arts you can spend a lifetime reaching for the stars only to come up empty.
There is a story that’s been coming to life in Jon for years in the movie, but it’s been a fight for him to write the amazing play he knows he has inside of him. Viewers will be transported to 1990 when Larson was working as a waiter and struggling to write the play of his dreams. The drama, based on the autobiographical musical by late playwright Jonathan Larson (the creator of Rent), is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s feature directorial debut.
